Portuguese Citizenship by Descent – Informational Overview

Applies to Individuals born abroad whose mother or father held Portuguese nationality at the time of the child’s birth.

You will need:

• Proof of the parental link (birth certificates establishing the relationship).  
• Declaration of the desire to acquire Portuguese nationality.  
• Properly legalized and (if needed) translated foreign documents.  
• For minors: declaration usually made by legal representatives.

Applies to  Individuals with at least one original Portuguese grandparent (ascendant of the 2nd degree in the direct line) who has not lost Portuguese nationality.

You will need:

• Proof of the unbroken lineage (grandparent → parent → applicant).  
• Formal declaration of the desire to be Portuguese.  
• Effective ties (laços de efetiva ligação) to the Portuguese national community. Official guidance has recognized knowledge of the Portuguese language as a key indicator. Under Lei Orgânica n.º 1/2026, attribution under this route also requires fulfillment of certain requirements from the naturalization framework (knowledge of Portuguese culture, history and symbols; knowledge of fundamental rights and duties and the political organization of the State; solemn declaration of adherence to the principles of the democratic rule of law; capacity for subsistence; and absence of certain serious criminal convictions or security concerns).  
• Clean criminal record criteria (e.g., no final conviction to a prison sentence of 3 years or more for crimes punishable under Portuguese law, and no involvement in terrorism-related activities).

Applies to  Individuals who are descendants in the 3rd degree in the direct line (bisnetos / great-grandchildren) of original Portuguese citizens.

You will need:

• Proof of the full lineage across three generations.  
• This route is framed as a form of naturalization.  
• Legal residence in Portuguese territory for at least five years.  
• Other naturalization-related conditions generally apply (including language/culture knowledge, adherence to democratic principles, criminal record/security criteria, and capacity for subsistence). The normal longer residence periods for standard naturalization are dispensed with under the specific provision for 3rd-degree descendants.

This is a more demanding route than the parent or grandparent pathways because of the residence requirement.
