This site is an independent informational resource designed to help people understand and navigate the process of obtaining Portuguese citizenship by descent (nacionalidade portuguesa por ascendência).

We provide practical guides, document checklists, translated materials, links to official sources, directories of professionals, estimated timelines, and step-by-step information on topics such as embassy/consulate appointments.

We do not provide legal advice, legal representation, or any professional services. All content is for general educational purposes only.

High-Level Pathways to Citizenship by Descent

Portuguese nationality law recognizes several descent-based routes (subject to current legislation, including changes under Lei Orgânica n.º 1/2026, which entered into force in May 2026). Eligibility depends on your specific family circumstances, documentation, and other requirements.

The main high-level pathways include:

  • Children of Portuguese citizens — Generally treated as attribution of nationality of origin (nacionalidade originária) when one or both parents held Portuguese nationality at the time of birth. Proof of the parental link and, in many cases, registration of the birth in the Portuguese civil registry are central.

  • Grandchildren of Portuguese citizens — Possible through acquisition of nationality, typically requiring proof of the lineage and demonstration of an effective connection to the Portuguese community (often including Portuguese language knowledge).

  • Great-grandchildren (bisnetos) of original Portuguese citizens — Expanded under the 2026 reforms, with requirements that include proof of lineage and effective ties to the Portuguese community.

Other historical or special regimes (such as the former Sephardic Jewish descendants route) are no longer available for new applications. Laws, requirements, processing practices, and interpretations can change.

Always verify the latest rules directly with official Portuguese authorities.
